FORRÓ IN PORTO

The emergence of Forró, in Porto, goes back to the beginning of this century, on the second floor of an arts and performances house, in a small half-shade room, imbued with an intimate and familiar atmosphere. Artistic and Cultural tendencies were reborn in a city that, for a while, had forgotten its role has a center for the dissemination of cultural activities.

Just like any other cultural progress, Forró came to Porto to alter people’s life, and it was love at first sight! It was a “once a week” love. In the beginning, on Saturdays, forrozeiros gathered together to share, laugh and dance by the sound of Circuladô de Fulô, Falamansa and others alike. “Forró Universitário” and “Xote” filled the room with contagious emotions and the forrozeiros danced non-stop.

Back then, we didn’t have classes. Forrozeiros from Porto, ever since the beginning, danced with their hearts and musicality. Commitment to each other and to the music reigned over the room.
Step by step, the curious ones appeared and, together, carried away by the rhythm, were taking the first steps towards the creation of this wonderful community. And so, love was growing and the family getting bigger.

Nowadays, and keeping the atmosphere that gave birth to Forró in Porto, we are more than 500. There are regular classes for all levels of expertise, several parties per week, and live performances – not to mention our famous evenings of “clandestine Forró” in some iconic squares of the city center.
